Dubai: Imagine having to climb the stairs of the world's tallest hotel at 72 floors — a tough job, yes. But world renowned cyclist Krystian Herba means to make the climb even tougher by taking his bicycle up 2,030 steps of the Rose Rayhaan by Rotana Dubai on Monday to set a new Guinness world record.
A world record holder itself, Rose Rayhaan announced on its second anniversary its support for the Polish cyclist's goal to attempt to make a new world record for Most Stairs Climbed by Bicycle and Most Buildings Climbed by Bicycle.
"For the past two years, we have dominated the skyline of Dubai and we felt that it is no better opportunity to get a second world record with the help of Krystian and his team climbing the stairs of Rose Rayhaan by Rotana," David Matthews, general manager of Rose Rayhaan, commented.
As the 333-metre hotel has only 1,115 steps, Herba will have to do a split-climb to accomplish this feat. He said the plan is to bring his bicycle up the stairs to the 23rd floor, take the elevator down, and climb up again to finish 2,030 steps. His biggest challenge, he said, is in the elevator.
‘Very much fast'
"Elevator here is very fast so there's not too much place. There will be also people. I cannot touch the ground and it's easy to lose my balance so I have to concentrate," Herba, 31, told Gulf News.
"My bicycle doesn't have suspension. Going up is much different — it's like jumping in one leg and with 10 kilos [on your] back," he added.
Herba's biggest sports dream is to conquer the "crown of the land" or the highest buildings on land through his bike. He has climbed seven buildings so far, including the highest building and hotel of Europe, and the highest buildings in Austria and Poland.
Asked what his secret was, the cyclist said, "I always try to breathe very slowly and take off the stress from my body. I just think about climbing, not about records."
Accompanying Herba through his climb is a team of eight people, including his brother, to give him technical support.
‘Follow exactly'
"We're gonna mark all the stairs with numbers so we know we follow exactly where we are. On the way, there's not much you can do because he's on his own when he's climbing.
"But before that we'll try to do everything to make sure that nothing is in the staircase, nothing will disturb him on the way up," Konrad Herba said.
